July’s educational luncheon took place on Wednesday, July 15th, from 11:30 am-1:00 pm, at the Grand Street Cafe in Kansas City. The topic of this session was Mapping Employee Skills for Effective Hiring, Development, and Succession Planning.
Speaker Sarah W. Rock discussed how organizations often take a reactive approach to employee training and development, responding to an existing or imminent knowledge gap. For example, only providing training when employees transfer into a new position or when implementing a new process or technology. However, employee training and development can be approached in a more proactive way by aligning training initiatives with the organization’s strategic planning to ensure the most effective utilization of resources. Ms. Rock outlined how creating a Skills Map allows the organization to identify existing and potential gaps, build purposeful overlap for career pathways and succession planning, and build a foundation for aligning future strategic plans.
The luncheon was a success, with 46 people in attendance.
